Heresy

Rouen, France, 2025

Jeanne d'Arc*  was a peasant girl who, believing she was divinely guided, led the French people/army to victory at Orléans against the English and the pro-English Burgundians. The Orleans battle took place in 1429 during the Hundred Years' War. She was captured, and eventually handed over to the Bishop of Beauvais. He’d been after her for a while because the Church didn’t like cross dressing peasant girls who spoke directly to saints in heaven. She was then tried for heresy/witchcraft  ergo she had been wearing men’s clothing (in the fight against the English)—and condemned to burn at the stake.

Her burning took place in 1431 at the age of 19. "After she died, the English raked back the coals to expose her charred body so that no one could claim she had escaped alive. They then burned the body twice more, to reduce it to ashes and prevent any collection of relics, and cast her remains into the Seine River"

*Jeanne d'Arc is now a patron saint of France and a symbol of courage and feminine power.
