FLAG DAYS: New York artist collaborates with Grand Flag

June 08, 2021 in intervention, grand flag

Two flags for the Grand Flag project have been created by New York City artist Chris Costan. The formal raising of the first flag took place on Friday, May 21, 2021 with WATCHING (The World is Blue), the first flag in Costan’s flag a series in two parts. LISTENING is the second flag and will be flown following WATCHING (The World is Blue). Costan’s work often utilizes idea-encoded imagery, which is what we see in these flags. The images were created with paint on watercolor paper, and digital methods were used as well. The images were then commercially printed on nylon, are double sided and sized at 4 X 6 feet. Costan’s flags will be shown/flown until June 25, 2021.

About Grand Flag:
Grand Flag was founded in 2019 by artist James Esber. This project is about symbols, messages and sometimes words. Located on the roof of the artist's home and former Store for Rent Gallery, 179 Grand St. in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, Grand Flag is an ongoing curatorial project intended to promote the free expression of art and ideas in a public space.
