interventions: Bluebeard

The folk tale “Bluebeard” (“La Barbe Bleue”) was published 1697 and is not as well known-as a fairytale in the United States, the character of Bluebeard was based on the 15th-century French nobleman and serial killer, Gilles de Rais. Bluebeard was the wealthy blue-bearded man who slit the throats of his half-dozen wives, leaving their corpses in the basement of his castle. This appears to be a fairy tale that was specifically aimed at little girls,” teaching little girls to love a man who will kill them and the attempts of one wife to escape the fate of her predecessors. Bluebeard is a story of horror and magic but is a fairy tale because it combines the real world with fantasy and includes characters which are either good or evil.
