Venice was able to survive during its three centuries of political, military and commercial decline, caused by Turkish expansion and the discovery of the Americas. The tone of Venice developed across the course of the fifteenth century--- Venice was a republican empire, dedicated to the destruction of tyranny and the defense of liberty.Diplomacy, wealth, justice and prosperity, the main aspects of the history of Venice, have resulted in the nickname, ‘Serenissima’.
